Juvenile Court Supervision Types
The Yavapai County Juvenile Court provides several levels of supervision depending on the frequency and severity of the offenses committed by the youth, the rehabilitative needs of the youth, and the ability to provide consistent monitoring of the youth for community safety. A graduated and data informed approach is always applied when assigning juveniles to specific levels of supervision.
Diversion
Diversion is a program through the Yavapai County Juvenile Court that is offered to juveniles who commit minor offenses. This program keeps the juvenile out of the court process, but requires the juvenile to accept responsibility and complete consequences for his/her actions. The juvenile, parents and/or guardians, and the probation department must agree to the diversion. Results of diversions can involve treatment, an apology letter, community restitution, monetary fines and restitution. Upon completion of the diversion, the juvenile’s file is closed without court involvement.
Detention Alternative Options (DAO)
The Yavapai County Juvenile Court utilizes Detention Alternatives Options (DAO) as a community-based alternative to detainment in appropriate cases. Options include GPS ankle monitoring, home detention, and house arrest as alternatives to detention for selected juvenile offenders. House arrest is the least restrictive option, which is ordered by the Court and the juvenile is supervised by the parent/guardian. Juveniles placed on GPS are held to a contract and strict schedule approved by their probation officer. The probation officer can track the movement of the GPS unit at any time and the unit will advise the system of any change in movement or location violations. Home detention includes GPS monitoring and a detention officer who makes field and phone contacts with the juvenile in the community. The objective of this program is to reduce recidivism, ensure appropriate use of detention for all juveniles, and to increase the use of non-secure alternatives to detention.
Standard Probation
Standard Probation is a court-ordered supervision level which requires the juvenile and his/her parents/guardians abide by conditions of probation. Juveniles on Standard Probation are generally required to complete community restitution, participate in counseling, enrichment programs, and pay restitution in victim cases. Parents are generally assessed fees and are required to participate in their juvenile’s probation activities. Probation officers routinely make field contact with these juveniles at their home, school, or employment.
Juvenile Intensive Probation Supervision (JIPS)
Juvenile Intensive Probation Supervision (JIPS) is a court-ordered supervision level for juveniles who are at a higher risk level than Standard Probation. Juveniles and their parents are required to adhere to court-ordered conditions of probation. Juveniles are placed on house arrest and monitored closely by a probation officer. The officers make frequent field contacts with juveniles at their home, school, or employment. These juveniles are expected to participate in 32 hours of activity each week, which may include school, work, treatment, and community restitution.
